After many years of working to improve people’s oral health, we have realised that dental emergencies often occur due to oral conditions that have been neglected, were not diagnosed in time, and hence were not treated beforehand.  Dental emergencies can sometimes be very serious.  We don’t concentrate ONLY on relieving your dental pain or emergency in the short term, but after relieving your pain—we would like to do thorough examinations to ensure no other potential emergencies exist in your mouth, and if they do, they are treated in a timely fashion.

Teeth are like “cars” in that sense. Teeth require regular check-ups and cleans, etc., just like our cars require changes of filters, engine oil, etc. on a regular basis. If not done regularly, they may lead to emergencies, just as an unserviced car may refuse to start on a certain day in winter or even lead to an accident due to a failure during a long drive.

Know What to Do When the Unexpected Happens

white hills man smiling in dental chair | emergency dentist bendigoWe know a dental emergency can be scary and confusing, so we’ll try to see you in our dental clinic as soon as possible. However, there are some things you can do in the meantime that can help alleviate your pain and save your tooth:

  • Tooth pain — A severe toothache is unbearable, so we recommend taking over-the-counter pain relievers and placing an ice pack on your face until you can reach our dental office.
  • Knocked-out tooth — The sooner you reach our dental clinic, the better chance we have of saving your tooth. Until then, try placing it back in its socket without touching the roots. If that doesn’t work, store it in your cheek or a glass of milk until your appointment.
  • Lost filling or crown — To avoid infection or further damage to your weakened tooth, it’s essential to contact us right away. Rinse your mouth and avoid chewing on that side of your mouth.
  • Chipped or broken tooth — When you break your tooth, it’s susceptible to bacteria and further breakage. Rinse your mouth to keep the area clean, and use an ice pack to help with swelling or discomfort.
